Adaptation. 96” x 144” (Together). 2019. Painted for Murals of North Nashville Exhibition for The Frist Art Museum.

In Adaptation, XPayne pits young Black Mickey Mouse against the ongoing struggle with capitalism. Mickey has his ears cut off as he is dropped out of his world ans into a new, burning environment ruled by a giant green dragon made of paper money. Color is important here as well; the background of this world is red, white, and blue. This dragon is the seemingly intangible obstacle of economic vulnerability the world around him faces. Mickey’s mentor is a stoic Batman figure, and he hands Mickey a shield and broken spear, usually associated with military tactician Chief Shaka Zulu. His love, Minnie Mouse is featured on the posters on the burning buildings behind him, accompanied by the quote, “Goin’ Through It, but We Gon’ Do It!” These cultural icons engage and older audience, while the use of children and child versions of older icons appeal to younger audiences while inspiring them to create and fulfill their own destiny.
